Encoffining and covering with the lid (liǎn [斂], [fanqie:] li + yan; Xuanying's commentary explains it as clothing the corpse; the Shiming says: "Liǎn [殮] is liǎn [斂, gathering]; it means storing away so that it is no longer seen." The minor dressing takes place within the inner chamber; the major encoffining takes place at the eastern staircase).
