溝坑 (Ditch and pit: The upper character has the fanqie 古侯 [gōu]. The Zhouli says: 'Water channels are called 溝.' The Guiyuan zhuchong says: 'A canal within a city that allows water to flow.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'A water conduit four feet wide and four feet deep; derived from 水 [water] with the sound 冓. 冓 has the fanqie 古侯 [gōu].' The lower character has the fanqie 苦耕 [kēng]. The Erya says: '坑 means ruins.' Guo Pu's commentary says: 'Moats, ponds, mounds, and ruins.' The Cangjie pian says: 'A chasm, a pitfall.' The Shuowen jiezi omits its gloss. The Gujin zhengzi derives it from 土 [earth] with the sound 亢. 亢 has the sound 岡 [gāng]).
