Washing and cleansing (盥洒: the upper character [盥] is pronounced 管; the Shuowen says it means to wash hands, an associative compound composed of 臼, 水 'water', and 皿 'basin'; the lower character [洒 is pronounced] 西 + 禮 fanqie, sometimes written 洗; the Shuowen says 洒 means to wash and cleanse, a phono-semantic character).
