Encroach and oppress (侵[(土/儿/夕)*力]: the first character, qi [七] + lin [林] fan. Liu Zhao's commentary to the Gongyang zhuan says: “To encroach and harm.” The Shuowen says: “To advance gradually; formed from person [人] holding a broom [帚] in hand (sound zhang [章] + liu [柳] fan), like advancing by sweeping.” Clerical script abbreviates it to 侵. The second character, li [力] + jing [兢] fan. The Cang Jie Pian says: “To encroach and insult.” The Guangya says: “To violate; to oppress.” The Shuowen writes it as 夌, meaning to encroach).
