To demote and dismiss (貶黜: the first [character] is *p(yit)* + *'(em)* in fanqie. He [Xiu's] commentary on the Gongyang zhuan says: '貶 means to diminish; to praise good and diminish evil.' The Shuowen also says: 'To diminish; derived from 貝 with 乏 phonetic.' Ancient script writes it as 𦥤, derived from 寸, with 臼 overturned over it; 寸 is a human hand. The second [character] is *th(yok)* + *l(yut)* in fanqie. Fan Ning's Jijie says: '黜 means to demote, to depose.' Du [Yu's] commentary on the Zuozhuan says: '黜 means to banish.' Jia [Kui's] commentary on the Guoyu says: 'To discard.' The Shuowen says: 'To demote downward; derived from 黑 with 出 phonetic.' 褒 is pronounced *b(u)* + *m(aw)* in fanqie.)
