金翅鳥 (fanqie: 施 + 鼓, [chì]. The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Wings of a bird; derived from 羽 with 支 as phonetic'; or written with 氏 as 𦐊, both are acceptable. The sūtra says: 'Golden-winged bird' [garuḍa], also called 'large-crop bird'; in Sanskrit called Garuḍa [迦婁羅], or called Garuḍa [揭路茶], or named 'enemy of nāgas'; all are names established based on its appearance or deeds. Among the eight classes of supernatural beings, it is one class. Possessing great supernatural power, it continually feeds on nāgas. Nāgas have the four modes of birth—egg-born, womb-born, moisture-born, and transformation-born—and these birds are likewise so. Their strength has different gradations, fully described as in the sūtra text; here I merely compile their variant names, phonetic glosses, and written characters.)
