珊覩史多: The first character is pronounced 桑 + 安 fanqie. Sanskrit; the name of the middle heaven in the upper Desire Realm. Anciently named Tuṣita (兜率陀) or Dōushù (兜術), both of which are corrupt and abbreviated. In the Tang language, it is called “Contentment.” Because the lower heavens are mostly heedless, and the upper heavens are mostly dull and indolent, receiving pleasures without advancing, it is called “Contentment.” Bodhisattvas of their final rebirth who are destined to succeed to Buddhahood in one lifetime mostly serve as the king of this heaven; the future Maitreya is currently the king in that heaven.
