Intelligent and perspicacious (聰叡; the first character is fanqie 倉 + 紅. In the Vinaya text it is written with 公 as 聡, a popular character. The Shangshu says: "Hearing is called 聰." Kong Anguo says: "Hearing clearly and discerningly with the ears." The Shuowen says: "To discern; it takes radical 耳 and 怱 as phonetic." 怱 has the same pronunciation as above; derived from 怱, 怱 is fanqie 楚 + 紅, a pictograph. The second character is fanqie 悅 + 惠. The Hongfan says: "叡 makes a sage." Zheng's Commentary on the Liji says: "Quintessence of thought." The Guangya says: "Wisdom." The Gujin zhengzi says: "Deep discernment; it takes radical [(├/匚)*又], radical 谷 abbreviated, and radical 目." [(├/匚)*又] is pronounced 殘).
