To mock and ridicule (譏誚): For the first character, the fanqie is 居 (j-) plus 依 (-i). He [Xiu]'s commentary on the Gongyang zhuan states that 譏 means to censure. Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the Liji states that it means to reprimand. The Guangya states that it means to admonish. The Shuowen jiezi states that it means to slander; it is formed with the speech radical (言) and 幾 as the phonetic element. For the second character, the fanqie is 樵 (q-) plus 曜 (-ao). The Kaosheng says that 誚 means to ridicule. The Shenglei notes that it is sometimes written 譙. The Fangyan states that 誚 means to reproach. The Cang Jie pian states that it means to scold. The Shuowen jiezi states that it means to disturb; it is formed with the speech radical (言) and 焦 as the phonetic element; in the vinaya text it is written with 肖, which is also acceptable.
