To set upright a spoon (豎匙): The first character has the fanqie 殊 (sh-) plus 主 (-u), a rising-tone character. The Shuowen jiezi says that 豎 means to stand upright. The Wenzidian shuo says that it is formed with 臤 and the abbreviated 豆 as the phonetic element; writing it with 立 as 竪 is a popular variant (豆 has the fanqie 竹 [zh-] plus 樹 [sh-]). The second character has the fanqie 是 (sh-) plus 支 (-i). The Fangyan states that 匙 means a spoon (匕). The Gujin zhengzi states that it means [a utensil for] serving rice; it is formed with 匕 and 是 as the phonetic element, pronounced the same as the character 時.
