Ulcer and carbuncle (癰疽: the upper character has the fanqie *[zhi]* + *gong*; Sima Biao's commentary on the *Zhuangzi* says: "Obstruction becomes an ulcer (癰)"; the *Shuowen* says: "Swelling"; the lower character has the fanqie *qi* + *yu*; the commentary on the *Zhuangzi* says: "Superficial heat becomes a carbuncle (疽)"; the *Shuowen* says: "A 疽 is also an ulcer; it takes 疒 [sickness] as radical and 且 as phonetic"; 且 has the fanqie *ji* + *yu*).
