Guarding and defending (防扞): the first character has the pronunciation of 房. Zheng's Commentary to the Liji says: 'Fáng means to prepare against.' The Shuowen says: 'An embankment or dike; it takes the radical 阜 and 方 is phonetic.' The second character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 寒 + 案. The Kaosheng says: 'Hàn means to ward off.' The Wenzidian shuo says: 'Hàn means to defend; it takes the radical 手 (hand) and 干 is phonetic; it is also written as 桿.'
