Shields (棑盾; the first character is 敗 + 埋, which is an alternative name for a shield. The *Kaosheng* states: "棑 is the name of a weapon." The *Wenzi dian* states: "Composed of 'wood' (木) and 非 as the phonetic." The second character is 脣 + 准. The *Wenzi jilüe* states: "A shield is a plank held to cover oneself." The *Shuowen jiezi* states: "盾 is a 瞂 [shield]"; 瞂 is pronounced 扶 + 發; "that by which one defends the body and covers the eyes; a pictographic character." It is also written as 𣸩).
