戰慄 ("trembling with fear"): The first character has the fanqie reading [tɕ- + -jɛn = zhàn] (旃善反). Gu Yewang says: "戰 means fearful." The Mao Shi says: "Trembling and apprehensive (戰戰兢兢)." Examining 戰戰兢兢: it describes a state of fear. The Erya says: "戰 means to shake." Guo Pu says: "To move and hurry in fright." It is also written 𢥇, and in ancient script it is written 𣥭. The second character has the fanqie reading [l- + -iɪt = lì] (隣一反). The Jixun says: "戰慄 means fearful." The Zishu says: "Anxious and grieved." The Kaosheng says: "Cautious and respectful. It is formed with the radical 忄 (pronounced xīn, 'heart') and 栗 as phonetic."
