伴侶 ("companion"): The first character has the fanqie reading [b- + -ɑn = bàn] (傍漫反). Wang Yi's commentary on the Chuci says: "伴 means a fellow traveler (旅)." The Yunying says: "伴 means an associate or companion (儔侶)." The Shuowen says: "A large appearance. It is formed with the radical 人 ('person') and 半 as phonetic. The character 半 is formed with 八 and 牛; to write it 半 in vulgar script is erroneous. 儔 has the fanqie reading 長流反." The second character has the fanqie reading [l- + -iɤ = lǚ] (力舉反). The Guangya says: "侶 means companion; it is also written 旅." The Gujin zhengzi says: "侶 means mate (儷). It is formed with the radical 人 ('person') and 呂 as phonetic. The character 呂 depicts the shape of the spine. 儷 is pronounced lì."
