To strike and beat (檛打: the upper character is zhuo-gua [fanqie]; 茁 is zhu-gua [fanqie]. The Shenglei gives it as 𥬲, meaning to beat. The Kaosheng says: "檛 means to strike; a horsewhip. It takes its semantic classifier from 木 'wood' and 過 is the phonetic." The lower character is de-geng [fanqie]. The Guangya says: "打 also means to strike." The Picang says: "A cudgel." 棓 has the phonetic reading pang-xiang [fanqie]. The Shuowen says: "It takes its semantic classifier from 手 'hand' and 丁 is the phonetic." Lu Fayan gives it as dou-ting [fanqie], which is a Wu dialect pronunciation and is not adopted here).
