Smelt and cast (陶鑄, the first char. fanqie: 道刀; the Han Commentary on the Shijing says, '陶 means to remove; it means to nourish.' The Kaosheng says, 'The appearance of flowing water.' The Shuowen jiezi says it is formed from 𨸏 with 匋 as phonetic. The second char. fanqie: 朱樹; the Zuozhuan says, 'Casting (鑄) tripods to depict the spirits.' Gu Yewang says, 'It refers to melting copper to make vessels.' The Shuowen jiezi says it is formed from 金 with 壽 as phonetic; 煬 has the fanqie 羊亮).
