Kneading clay [挻埴] (The upper character is 式 plus 延 fanqie; the lower character is 時 plus 弋 fanqie. The imperial commentary on the *Laozi* states: "挺 means to blend, to beat." The *Shuowen* has it with 'hand' [手] and 延 phonetic. 埴 is clay, sticky soil; potters blend clay to make earthenware vessels. The *Shuowen* has it with 'earth' [土] and 直 phonetic. In the treatise, writing it with 'earth' as 埏 is incorrect).
