Male viper 雄虺 (the second character is pronounced with the fanqie 暉 + 偉; the Mao Commentary on the Book of Songs says: "Do not act as a viper or lizard." The Erya says: "The pit viper (蝮虺) is three inches broad, with a head as large as a thumb." Gu Yewang says: "Hui is a pit viper." The Shuowen jiezi states that it takes the insect radical 虫 and the phonetic 兀; it is also written as 𩃾, with the same pronunciation).
