Stand out from one's fellows (拔萃: the first [character is pronounced] pu + ba fan; Gu Yewang says that ba (拔) is like drawing out; the Shuowen jiezi says it means to pull out, composed of 'hand' [手] with ba [犮] phonetic, the sound of 犮 being pan + bo fan. The second is quan + sui fan; the Zhouyi says cui (萃) means to assemble; the Shuowen jiezi says it is composed of 'grass' [艸] with zu [卒] phonetic).
