Monkeys and apes 猱猨 (the upper character has the fanqie: 奴高 [náo]; the lower has the fanqie: 越元 [yuán]). The Mao Commentary to the Shijing says: 'The nao (猱) is also of the ape class.' Guo's commentary to the Erya says: 'The ape resembles the macaque but is larger, with long arms, and is agile.' The Shuowen jiezi says both take 犬 ('dog') as semantic, and 柔 and 爰 as phonetic.
