旃茶羅（梵語也或云旃陁羅此譯云嚴熾謂屠殺者種類之名也一云主殺獄卒也西域記云其人行則搖鈴自標或柱破頭之竹若不然者王即與其罪也）。

旃茶羅 [cāṇḍāla] (Sanskrit; also written 旃陁羅. Here it is translated as 'stern and ferocious', referring to the caste of butchers and executioners; one authority says they are the prison wardens who preside over executions. The Record of the Western Regions says: “When such people walk, they ring a bell to mark themselves, or carry a split-topped bamboo pole; if they do not do so, the king imposes a punishment on them”).
