窳憜 [lazy and indolent] (The upper character is pronounced with the fanqie 俞主 [yǔ]. The Records of the Grand Historian says: “窳 also means lazy and indolent.” The Erya says: “Toiled.” Guo [Pu]'s commentary says: “Those who are toiled and worn out are often lazy and indolent. It means a lazy person who cannot get himself up, just as melons and gourds are attached to the ground and cannot stand up; hence the character 窳 is formed with two melons (瓜) to symbolize a lazy person staying inside the room without going out.” The Shuowen jiezi says it is an ideographic compound formed from 穴 [hole]. The lower character is pronounced with the fanqie 徒臥 [duò]. The Kaosheng says: “惰 means lazy.” The Shuowen jiezi says: “Formed from 心 [heart] with 隋 as the phonetic element”; it is also written as the character 惰).
