芬馥 [fragrant and sweet-smelling] (The upper character is pronounced with the fanqie 芬文 [fēn]. The Kaosheng says: “Fragrant scent.” In ancient script it is written from 屮 as 𡵳; 屮 is pronounced with the fanqie 丑列 [chè]. The Shuowen jiezi says: “The fragrance of sprouting plants dispersing; formed from 屮 with 分 as the phonetic element.” In clerical script today it is written from 草 [grass] as 芬; 芬 means harmonious. In the sūtra text it is written from 香 as 馚, which is not the original character. The lower character is pronounced with the fanqie 𠗦目 [fù]. The Han classic of poetry says: “芬馥 describes the appearance of a fragrant aroma”).
