Deaf and mute (聾瘂: the upper character has the fanqie 祿東. The Zuo zhuan says: "When the ears do not hear the harmony of the five tones, it is called deaf." Du Yu says: "Deaf means darkened [in hearing]." The Shuowen says: "It is formed with [the semantic element] 'ear' (耳) and [the phonetic element] lóng (龍); a phono-semantic character." In the sūtra text it is written as 韻, which does not form the proper character. The lower character has the fanqie 鵶賈. The Kaosheng says: "Unable to speak; though having voice, one is without words." The Gujin zhengzi says: "瘂 means dumb (瘖)." The Shuowen says: "It is formed with [the semantic element] nǐ (疒; fanqie 女厄) and [the phonetic element] yà (亞)." In the sūtra text it is written with 'mouth' (口) as 啞, pronounced è, meaning the sound of laughing, which is not the meaning intended in the sūtra).
