鞭撻（上必綿反說文云馬筞也從革便聲下他葛反鄭註周禮云抶也抶猶打擊也抶音恥栗反說文撻從手達聲也）。

Whipping and flogging (鞭撻: the first character has the fanqie 必綿 [biān]. The Shuowen says: "A horse whip." It is formed from 革 (leather) with 便 as the phonetic component. The second character has the fanqie 他葛 [tà]. Zheng's commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: "To beat (抶)." 抶 is like striking and hitting. 抶 has the fanqie 恥栗 [chì]. The Shuowen says that 撻 is formed from 手 (hand) with 達 as the phonetic component).
