Five Phases (五運: the second character is [pronounced with the fanqie] wang + wen; the Erya says: "To shift, transport, and move [徙]"; the Shiji says: "Fuxi ruled by the virtue of Wood, or is called the Spring Sovereign; Shennong ruled by the virtue of Fire, because Wood generates Fire; the Yellow Emperor ruled by the virtue of Earth, because Fire generates Earth; Shaohao ruled by the virtue of Metal, because Earth generates Metal; Zhuanxu ruled by the virtue of Water, because Metal generates Water; with the mutual generation of the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—they end and begin anew, which is called the Five Phases; furthermore, the Zhou ruled by the virtue of Wood, the Han ruled by the virtue of Fire, and the Qin was not a legitimate phase, its rule being between Wood and Fire").
