本系（上說文云作本從木一如木之有根下胡計反切韻云緒也爾雅云糸繼也說文云從糸[必-心]聲糸音覓[必-心]音曳延[必-心]也）。

本系 (The first character: the Shuowen jiezi states that 本 is written from 木 [tree] and 一, just like a tree having roots. The second character has the fanqie 胡計 [hú + jì]. The Qieyun states: 'Lineage/continuation.' The Erya states: '糸 means to succeed/continue.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Derived from 糸 [silk] with [必-心] as phonetic.' 糸 is pronounced 覓 [mì]; [必-心] is pronounced 曳 [yè], meaning to draw out or extend).
