A hundred lakṣas make one koṭi (百洛叉為一俱胝: Lakṣa and koṭi are both Sanskrit numerical terms. Sometimes one hundred thousand makes one lakṣa, or one million makes one lakṣa, or one hundred million makes one lakṣa. According to the Master Sun's Computational Classic of this land: ten tens make a hundred; ten hundreds make a thousand; ten thousands make a myriad (wàn). From myriad to myriad-myriad (yì), there are three grades of transformation: upper, middle, and lower. According to the Yellow Emperor's Computational Classic, there are twenty-three numbers in total: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, hundred, thousand, myriad (wàn), yì, zhào, jīng, gāi, zǐ, rǎng, gōu, jiàn, zhèng, and zài. From myriad onward, there are also three grades of counting: the lower grade increments tenfold, the middle grade increments hundredfold, and the upper grade increments yì-fold. Master Huiyuan states that the sūtra’s ‘koṭi’ corresponds to yì here, ‘ayuta’ to zhào, and ‘nayuta’ to jīng; the rest can be known by extension. From yì onward, each previous counting quantity is taken as one unit to count up to the next named quantity, all the way up to the ineffable-ineffable).
