筋脈 (sinews and vessels: the first character is *j[ū]-y[ín]* fan; the Rites of Zhou states: “Physicians nourish the sinews with acrid flavours.” The Shuowen jiezi states: “The strength of the flesh.” It is classified under 肉 [flesh] and 竹 [bamboo]; bamboo is an entity of numerous fibres. Classified under 力 [strength] because strength resembles the form of sinews. The sūtra text sometimes writing 荕 under 艸 or 䈥 under 角 are neither standard characters. The second character is *m[á]-b[ó]* fan; the Rites of Zhou states that salty flavours nourish the vessels. The Shuowen jiezi states: “Blood channels distributed through the body are called 脉.” The orthodox form is classified under 血 [blood] and 𠂢, written 𧖴; 𠂢 is pronounced *p[ǔ]-m[ài]* fan. The sūtra text writing with 永 is a vulgar character).
