池塹（上直离反廣雅曰亭水曰池下僉焰反顧野王云城池為塹即今城外壕坑也字書云城隍也說文云坑也從土斬聲也或從漸作壍亦同）。

池塹 (The first character is pronounced with the fanqie *ch-*, [chi], from 直 and 离. The *Guangya* states: 'Accumulated water is called a pond (池).' The second character is pronounced with the fanqie *q-*, [qian], from 僉 and 焰. Gu Yewang states: 'The moat of a city wall is a 塹; that is, the moat ditch outside the walls today.' The character books say: 'It is a city moat.' The *Shuowen* states: 'It means a pit; it takes 土 [earth] as semantic and 斬 as phonetic.' It is also written with 漸 as 壍, which is the same.)
