諂誑（上丑斂反周易云君子上交不諂下交不嬻也何注公羊傳云諂猶侫也莊子云希意道言謂之諂說文云諂諛也從言臽聲嬻音獨下居況反賈注國語云誑惑也郭注尒雅云欺誑也說文云從言狂聲也）。

諂誑 (The first character is pronounced with the fanqie *ch-*, [chan], from 丑 and 斂. The *Book of Changes* states: 'A gentleman in associating with superiors is not flattering; in associating with inferiors he is not disrespectful.' He's commentary on the *Gongyang zhuan* states: '諂 is like specious adulation.' The *Zhuangzi* states: 'Anticipating someone's intention and speaking accordingly is called flattery (諂).' The *Shuowen* states: '諂 means to flatter; it takes 言 [speech] as semantic and 臽 as phonetic.' 嬻 is pronounced like 獨 [du]. The second character is pronounced with the fanqie *k-*, [kuang], from 居 and 況. Jia's commentary on the *Guoyu* states: '誑 means to deceive and delude.' Guo's commentary on the *Erya* states: 'It means to cheat and dupe.' The *Shuowen* states: 'It takes 言 [speech] as semantic and 狂 as phonetic.')
