披緇（上敷羈反說文云開也散也或作帔襜也巾也又作被音平義反服也加也衣也今合從後作下側持反說文云緇黑色繒也論語云涅乎不緇注云涅謂黑泥可以染皂者也涅音奴結反從水日炙土也）。

披緇 (The first character has the fanqie fu + ji. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'To open; to disperse.' It is also written as 帔, meaning a short cape or kerchief. It is also written as 被, with the pronunciation ping + yi, meaning to wear, to add, or clothes. Here one should follow the latter form. The second character has the fanqie ce + chi. The Shuowen jiezi says: '緇 is black silk.' The Analects of Confucius says: 'Can it be immersed in black dye and not become black?' The commentary says: '涅 refers to black mud that can be used to dye things black.' 涅 has the fanqie nu + jie; it is composed of 'water' and 'sun parching earth').
