捶楚（上隹蘂反說文云以杖擊也從手垂聲或從竹作箠策也從木作棰棓也下瘡所反切韻云榎楚也楸木名亦荊從林疋聲疋音踈榎音賈）。

捶楚 (The first character is pronounced 隹 + 蘂 fanqie. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'To strike with a rod.' It takes 手 as semantic and 垂 as phonetic. Or, taking 竹 as semantic, it is written 箠, meaning a whip; taking 木 as semantic, it is written 棰, meaning a cudgel. The second character is pronounced 瘡 + 所 fanqie. The Qieyun says: 'The catalpa and the chuzi.' It is the name of a catalpa tree, and also vitex; it takes 林 as semantic and 疋 as phonetic. 疋 is pronounced 踈; 榎 is pronounced 賈).
