策勵（上楚革反韻集云謀也籌也顧野王云馬撾也釋名曰策者教令於上駈策諸下也下力制反字書云兔也廣雅云勸勵也說文云力也從力厲形聲字厲音同上猛也列也又嚴整也）。

策勵 (The first character has the fanqie chu + ge. The Yunji says: 'To devise; to calculate.' Gu Yewang says: 'A horsewhip.' The Shiming says: '策 means instructions issued from above to spur on those below.' The second character has the fanqie li + zhi. Dictionaries say: 'To exert.' The Guangya says: 'To encourage.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Effort; it is a phono-semantic character deriving from "strength" with the phonetic li.' 厲 has the same pronunciation as above, meaning fierce, arrayed, or stern and orderly).
