Cry of the crane (heli 鶴唳: the first character has the fanqie [reading] xia + ge [he]. The Shuowen [jiezi] says: "The crane is white in color with a long bill and a vermilion crest; it lives for a thousand years, a bird of the divine immortals." The Baopuzi states: "The crane calls in the ninth marsh, and its cry is heard reaching the heavens." The Huainanzi states: "The rooster knows the coming of dawn, and the crane knows midnight." This is it. The Shuowen [jiezi] says it takes 'bird' [as semantic component] and he as phonetic. 寉 has the fanqie [reading] he + ge [he], and says it takes 冖 and 隹; 隹 is a bird, and when the bird flies high wishing to emerge beyond 冖, it is pronounced gui + ying [fan]. The second character has the fanqie [reading] lang + ji [li]. The Qieyun says: "The cry of a crane").
