閥閱（上房越反下翼雪反考聲容受也字書云簡閱具其數自序功狀也史記云人[耜-耒]功有五各明其等曰閥積閥曰閱說文二字並從門伐悅省聲也）。

閥閱 (Lineage and merit: the upper character has the fanqie 房越; the lower character has the fanqie 翼雪; the Kaosheng says it means to accommodate and receive; character dictionaries state that it means to review and examine their numbers, and to recount one's meritorious records; the Shiji says: “A person's meritorious deeds have five ranks; clearly demonstrating each rank is called 閥; accumulated 閥 is called 閱”; the Shuowen notes that both characters are formed from 門, with the phonetics 伐 and an abbreviated 悅).
