The upper [character is read with the] fanqie pi + ren. The Yupian states: 'Binbin (繽繽) is the appearance of coming and going; or abundant; also numerous.' The lower [character is read with the] fanqie fu + yun. The Yupian states: 'Fen (紛) means disorderly.' The Guangya states: 'Binbin means numerous; fenfen means disorderly;' that is to say, falling down in great numbers and in disorder. In the text of the sūtra it is written with the grass radical as 𦿜, pronounced bin, which is the character 𮒂賓, the name of a musical pipe for the fifth month; or written as fen (芬), meaning luxuriant and fragrant herbs; both characters are erroneous.
