揀擇（上姦眼反文字集略云揀選也亦擇也從手柬聲說文柬字從八在束中下音澤切韻擇亦揀也從手澤省聲也）。

揀擇: The upper [character is read with the] fanqie jian + yan. The Wenzi jilüe states: 'Jian (揀) means to choose; also to select; formed with the hand radical (手) and jian (柬) providing the phonetic sound.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'The character jian (柬) is formed from ba (八) inside shu (束).' The lower [character is] pronounced ze. The Qieyun states: 'Ze (擇) also means to choose; formed with the hand radical (手) and an abbreviated ze (澤) providing the phonetic sound.'
