纏縛: The upper [character is read with the] fanqie zhi + lian; in popular usage it is also written as 纏. The Qieyun states: 'To entwine.' The Kaosheng states: 'Chan (纏) also means to bind.' It is also pronounced with the fanqie zhi + zhan. The lower [character is read with the] fanqie fu + yue. The Qieyun states: 'To tie.' The character dictionaries state: 'Fu (縛) also means to entwine.' The Sanqi jing states: 'Like a silkworm spinning a cocoon, spitting out silk to bind itself.' Formed from the silk radical (糸) with an abbreviated bo (博) providing the phonetic sound. The sūtra writes it as 縳; the Erya states: 'Ten feathers are called a zhuan (縳).' The text has an error.
