諂諛（上丑琰反又作讇切韻諛也論語云非其鬼而祭之者諂也鄭注云諂媚求其福下以朱反說文諛亦諂也從言臾聲經文單作乃須臾字也）。

諂諛: The upper [character is read with the] fanqie chou + yan; also written as 讇. The Qieyun states: 'Flattery (yu).' The Analects states: 'To sacrifice to a spirit that does not belong to one is flattery (chao).' Zheng's Commentary states: 'To fawn and flatter in seeking its blessings.' The lower [character is read with the] fanqie yi + zhu. The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Yu (諛) also means to flatter; formed from speech (言) with yu (臾) providing the phonetic sound.' In the sūtra text it is written singly as [臾], which is the character of xuyu (須臾, 'a brief moment').
