裸形(上華瓦反本音郎果反為避俗諱作上音顧野王云脫衣露袒也說文從衣果聲案坼衣半上半下果在中即為裹併衣在一邊即為裸會意字也經文從示作祼音灌非此用也)。
裸形: The upper [character is read with the] fanqie hua + wa; its original pronunciation is the fanqie lang + guo, but to avoid a vulgar taboo it is given the upper pronunciation. Gu Yewang states: 'Taking off clothes to expose oneself bare.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Formed from the clothing radical (衣) with guo (果) providing the phonetic sound.' Note: Splitting the clothing into half upper and half lower with guo in the middle forms wrap (裹); placing the clothing to one side forms naked (裸), an ideographic compound character. In the text of the sūtra it is written with the altar radical as guan (祼), pronounced guan, which is not suitable here.
