蓬勃（上蒲公反亂也下蒲沒反勃盛也案如蓬草之亂盛也今經文作熢㶿二形上音峯謂𠋫望者夜火也字書無蓬音下㛘煙起也若塵起作𡋯若香氣作馥若心逆者作悖若水廣浡非亂盛卒起皃也今合作蓬勃也）。

蓬勃 (for the first character, [péng], fanqie 蒲公 [b- + -uŋ = buŋ/péng], meaning chaotic. For the second character, [bó], fanqie 蒲沒 [b- + -uot = buot/bó]. 勃 means flourishing. It is noted: like the flourishing chaos of tumbleweeds. Now in the sūtra text it is written as the two forms 熢 and 㶿. The first is pronounced 峯, meaning a watchman's beacon fire at night; the character books have no péng pronunciation for it. For the second character, 㛘 means smoke rising; if dust rises it is written 𡋯; if fragrant vapour it is written 馥; if perverse of mind it is written 悖; if broad waters it is 浡; none of these describe a chaotic, flourishing, sudden rising appearance. It should properly be written 蓬勃.)
