(The first character has the fanqie *gu* + *yao* [xiao]. Guo [Pu]'s commentary on the *Erya* states: "The upper is the owl." The *Qieyun* states: "An unfilial bird that eats its mother; therefore at the winter solstice people catch owls and dismember (*zhe*) them." The character is composed of a bird whose head rests upon a tree. The second character has the fanqie *ji* + *ding* [ling]. The *Wenzi yinyi* states: "A crow's quill (*wuling*); that is, a feather quill. *Ling* means a feather." In the sūtra text it is written as 鴿 (dove). The *Shijing* says: "The *jige* [wagtails] are on the plateau." The *Erya* states: "The *jiling* is the *xiqu*." Guo states: "A kind of sparrow." This does not carry the meaning of a feather quill.)
