厭禱（上於琰於艷二反切韻著也作也字書魅也下刀老反鄭注周禮云求福曰禱謂禱於天地社稷也包咸注論語云謂請於鬼神也說文云告事求福也從示壽省聲也燾音桃也）。

Sorcery and prayer (厭禱: the upper character has two fanqie readings: *yú* + *yǎn* [yǎn] and *yù* + *yàn* [yàn]; the *Qieyun* says, "To adhere; to make." Character glossaries say, "Fascinating spirit." The lower character has the fanqie *dāo* + *lǎo* [dǎo]; Zheng Xuan's commentary on the *Zhouli* says, "Seeking blessings is called *dǎo*, referring to praying to Heaven, Earth, and the altars of soil and grain." Bao Xian's commentary on the *Analects* says, "It refers to petitioning the spirits." The *Shuowen* says, "Reporting affairs to seek blessings"; it is categorized under "spirit" with an abbreviated *shòu* phonetic; *dào* is pronounced *táo*).
