儒語(上人朱反切韻直也說文柔也禮記哀公問於孔子儒之行也從人需聲下魚舉反說文云直言曰論論難曰語從言吾聲案律文徐徐儒語即和柔之語也作此濡字乃水名也非儒語用也)。
Gentle speech (儒語: the first character is [pronounced with the] fanqie [initial and final of] 人 and 朱; the Qieyun says it means straightforward; the Shuowen says it means soft; the Book of Rites says Duke Ai asked Confucius about the conduct of the scholar [rú]; it takes the 'person' radical and the phonetic 'xū'. The second character is [pronounced with the] fanqie [initial and final of] 魚 and 舉; the Shuowen says direct words are called 'lùn', and discussing difficulties is called 'yǔ'; it takes the 'speech' radical and the phonetic 'wú'. Examining the Vinaya text, 'speaking gently and softly' (徐徐儒語) refers to gentle and soft speech; writing it with this character 濡 refers to the name of a river, not the proper usage for 'gentle speech').
