Wényǐ (mosquitoes and ants) (the first character has the fanqie wáng + fēn; popularly written as 蚉, properly written as 蟁. The Shuowen jiezi says: "A biting flying insect." The character is formed with an abbreviated hūn [dusk], because it emerges at dusk. The second character has the fanqie niú + yǐ; the Shuowen jiezi writes it as 螘, meaning a píbǐ. The Erya says: "The pífú is a large ant; small ones are yǐ." It is formed with the "insect" radical and the sound qǐ. Writing it as 蟻 today is the popular form).
