牀[爿*((┤*├)/由/八)]（上士莊反考聲云牀榻也又作床俗字通用也說文云從木爿聲爿音牆下古皇反字書云牀𤖖也謂橫木也律文作桄謂恍榔木名也今俗亦用為床桄字也）。

牀[爿*((┤*├)/由/八)] (The first character has the fanqie 士莊 [chuáng]. The Kaosheng states: 'It is a couch or couch-bed.' It is also written as the popular character 床, which is interchangeable. The Shuowen states: 'Derived from 木 with 爿 as phonetic; 爿 has the sound 牆 [qiáng].' The second character has the fanqie 古皇 [guāng]. The Zishu states: 'The crosspiece of a couch', meaning the crossbeams. In the Vinaya text it is written as 桄, referring to the tree name guāngláng [areca or betel palm]; now in popular usage it is also used for the crossbeam of a couch.).
