廛肆 (for the first character, [chán], fanqie 直連 [ɖ- + -iɛn = ɖiɛn/chán]; this is the standard character. In the text of the sūtra it is written 䣑, or as [堐-圭+(里/八/土)] or 𫮈; both forms are erroneous. It is noted that the Zhouli says: “廛 refers to empty ground in the marketplace.” The Kaosheng says: “One and a half mǔ.” The Yunying says: “A dwelling.” For the second character, [sì], fanqie 息利 [s- + -i = si/sì]. The Erya says: “肆 means old and new.” The Guangyun says: “To display; to let loose.” It is also written 肆.)
