Ajñāta is translated here as 'understanding', signifying his name because he was the first to realize and understand the Dharma. Kaṇḍina is a brahmin lineage name. The suffix na indicates the masculine grammatical gender, showing it is derived from the father. In the new translations of scriptures, it is rendered as Ājñāta-Kaṇḍina).
